Description of Technology Areas

Bandwidth management solutions
Software or other solutions that could help cable operators as they attempt to ensure bandwidth internal to their networks is used most efficiently, and if people wish to use more bandwidth, that there are mechanisms for them to pay for more service.

Broadband applications
Services that are maximized when carried over the broadband cable network.

Broadband wireless technology or applications
Wireless technologies that can extend existing cable services with mobile or portable capability throughout the home or in a portion of a cable television network.

Commercial service technologies over cable
Ways that cable operators could serve the small and mid size commercial community, differentiated from the traditional residential market for cable operators.

Home networking applications or solutions
Broadband consumer equipment and services, both using wireless or common residential wiring, which consumers may wish to have in their homes to extend or improve broadband connectivity to multiple devices.

Integrated digital video devices
TV sets, DVRs, portable media devices or other consumer equipment that includes the intelligence and capabilities of digital set top boxes.

Interactive games
Games that may be networked and played by more than one person.

IPTV solutions over cable
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol TV. These are applications or devices that may either display or deliver video services via Internet Protocol and have them displayed on a personal computer or television set. IP delivery uses smaller data streams than other technologies, often resulting in lesser video quality or more expensive distribution costs.

Multimedia services
Applications that contain video, voice, data, graphics, etc.

OpenCable Applications Platform (OCAP) application solutions
Applications created to run on cable set-top boxed using OCAP (cable industry middleware software specification)

Optical networking technologies that expand cable bandwidth
Devices and software that enable cable operators to upgrade or advance their fiber optic distribution system that is part of the cable hybrid fiber/coaxial network.

Seamless mobility using cable backbone
Applications and equipment that delivers seamless mobility services between mobile phone and cable networks.

Service creation management for the quadruple play
Network components based upon IP Multimedia Systems (IMS) or some other Service Deployment Platform (SDP) concept that helps cable operators with low-cost service creation management in a converged service environment (e.g., deploying voice, video, data, mobile services).

Voice over Internet Protocol advancements
Application software or component hardware that could be used to enhance and deliver Voice over Internet Protocol service on DOCSIS (Data over Cable Service Interface Specification) cable systems using PacketCable or other protocols.

Wideband or Ultraband proposals
Services or applications that can showcase the 160 megabits per second that cable operators intend to deliver with the new DOCSIS 3.0 specification.
